Part of Billabong’s commitment to the community is propagating local plant species for revegetation or restoration projects within the Goulburn Valley and surrounding regions.  We aim to provide quality plants at reasonable prices suited to individual requirements. Seed or plant material can usually be sourced from the local area so as to maintain plant characteristics that aid in the survival and success of the plants.

 

A range of trees, shrubs, ground covers, grasses and wildflowers are grown in various sized pots from 55mm forestry tubes through to advanced sizes. Your own seed can be grown or we can source locally collected seed from the Goulburn Broken Indigenous Seed Bank.

Plants are grown for large farm plantings, home gardens, Landcare groups, schools, local Government and catchment authorities.

 

Why use local plants?

Local or indigenous plants are those that grow naturally in specific area. They have evolved over time and adapted to the local weather conditions, soils and native birds/fauna. Local plants are ideal for windbreaks, revegetating a cleared area or fencing off some remnant bush and they have many benefits as follows –

• Increased productivity
• Reducing costs by utilising natural pest controls
• Reducing water needs
• Salinity control
• Shade/shelter for stock
• Fodder and firewood plantations
• Habitat for local wildlife
• Aesthetics

Preparation is important for successful projects

To ensure your project is a successful one, it is very important to plan ahead –

• Orders for autumn plantings need to be placed by October
• Orders for spring plantings need to be placed by February
• Prepare your ground, including weed control
• Water plants in well (continue to water them if there is no rainfall until they have time to establish)
• Use tree guards to protect from pests and wind.
