The Billabong Retail Nursery
Our Retail Nursery is an integral part of the Billabong Garden Complex providing a high quality retail sales outlet for its propagation nursery to access the general community.
Billabong’s retail nursery has an extensive range of plants, pots and garden accessories. Many of the plants within our retail nursery are grown on site within our propagation nursery therefore are adapted to and suited to local conditions therefore ideal for local gardens.
Our selection of plant species is large and varied, ranging from indigenous natives (local native species) through to exotics. You can also purchase plants in varying size pots from 55mm tubes right though to100lt bags of advanced stock, and during the winter months there is also large stocks of bare rooted varieties such as roses, weepers, fruit trees and ornamentals.
At Billabong we aim to provide you with all the advice and assistance you need to make your garden your favourite place to be. Our free advice and our large range can equip you with all you need to ‘Do It Yourself’ or we have garden designers and a garden maintenance team that can ‘Do It for You’.

Our staff are experienced and qualified and have a wealth of knowledge, able to provide you with all the tips and tricks that you need to make your garden grow. All staff have specialist skills and can assist you with design, plant selection and maintenance.
Displays to inspire
At Billabong we have numerous display areas aimed at providing customers with ideas and inspiration for their own gardens. The displays change quarterly and with each change will be a different garden theme, the introduction of new lines and some fantastic ideas.
Advanced trees and shrubs for instant gardens
At Billabong we have hundreds of advanced trees and shrubs to choose from to create the perfect garden in no time at all. Billabong has a huge range of species available including Ornamental pears and fruit trees, Plane trees, Flowering weepers, Silver Birch, Gleditsia and much more. Advanced plants create instant colour, effect and fill your garden as if it has been established for years. Your garden is an extension of your home and it can be revitalised and changed with a lot less effort and cost than that of building renovations. Options are endless and can be achieved with a little thought and creativity. If you don't have the time or the creativity to plan your garden oasis, talk to our friendly staff, they are more than happy to turn your ideas for your garden or your outdoor room into reality. You can continue to enjoy beautiful gardens during times of drought and water restrictions.
Water wise gardening tips ...
Plan your garden.
- Some areas within your garden are drier, some shady and some are exposed to wind. Select plants that are suited to these particular areas and group plants with the same requirements.
- Test your soil to determine soil type. Purchase your own test kit or collect soil samples from various locations in your garden (be sure to label them) and bring them in to the staff at Billabong for testing.
- Talk to nursery staff and take a photo of your garden area when you visit, they will assist you in making suitable water wise plant choices for your soil type and garden design.
Choose plant species carefully
- Local indigenous native plants require significantly less water than many exotic species and are generally less susceptible to pests and diseases as they have adapted to local conditions over time. Talk to nursery staff for suggested local indigenous native species that would be suitable for the design of your water wise garden.
- Plant trees to create shade as this reduces water evaporation.
Use your soil to store water.
- Good soil structure will hold water better than poor quality soil; soil can be improved by adding organic materials such as compost and manures.
Water, not wasting!
- Water in the cooler hours of the evening or morning, and ensure it is not windy.
- Use a hose so you can monitor how much water you are putting on each garden bed.
- Mulch on gardens reduces evaporation, shields soil from sun and reduces water run off.
- Use a sprinkler system with timers and rain sensors.
- Water for longer and less often to encourage deep root systems and increase drought tolerance.
- Collect your water, install rain water tanks and grey water systems and utilise this water on your garden

COMPANION PLANTING
Companion planting can assist with bumper crops and pesticide free gardening. Companion plants can repel pests when planted alongside vegetables, other plants attract pest predators to the vegetable patch, and the roots of some plants secrete substances that repel pests or provide nutrients to the plants around them. Gardening talks
At Billabong a series of gardening talks have been set for the next 12 months. Like our changing display areas, these gardening talks will provide ideas and inspiration and details on how to do it your self. Our gardening talk schedule is as follows –
- Sunday 24th July 11am–12 noon – Winter Gardening, all your questions answered
- Sunday 2nd October 11am – 12.30 pm (Registration at 10.45 am) – Water Wise Gardening
- Sunday 7th May 2006 11am – 12.30 – Attracting birds to your garden
- Sunday 18th June 2006 11am – 12.30 – Planting & maintenance of bare rooted stock
- Sunday 1st April 2007 11am - 12.30pm - Surviving the drought in your garden
There is a small fee to attend gardening talks and places at are limited, therefore it is essential to contact the nursery on 5821 8632 to book.
